Information on birdcages veils
What is a birdcage veil? a birdcage veil is made from a special type of millinery netting which is formed into various
designs to create a veil to cover all or part of the face. To make matters confusing it can often be
called by various names , some of which are french veil, russian net, cage net, cage veil, english net, vintage veil and merry
widow veil.
Types
of birdcage veils
The classic
style of birdcage veil is often referred to as a BLUSHER VEIL,
see examples above. This is usually a veil that can sit anywhere from just covering the forehead , to chin length.
generally this is mounted onto a comb which slides forward into the hair . It covers part, or all of the face, some
of the hair at the sides but does not generally cover the back of the head. It can be worn straight, on or at an
angle and there are numerous variations of this style that can be made.
Tip .When
you see photos which show this type of veil and the veil looks quite snug to the head especially at the sides , there are
most likely bobby pins used also to pin this into place . very few actually sit like this just by using the comb, most need
some extra help to achieve this snug look.
Important information
on the length of the veil
when ordering
a blusher type veil it is important to think about where you are planning on positioning the veil on your
hair. for example standard veiling is 9 inches , A 9 inch veil when worn in the classic side front position will
generally come down to about nose length, but if you want to wear it further back this is then going to shorten the veil to
sit at around eye level.
If you want to wear your fascinator in the now very popular low behind the ear position
as in picture 1 below often a customised bandeau style would better suit this positioning.
A very
popular look at present is the BANDEAU VEIL see examples below . These are
sometimes know as a visor veil, cage veil or french veil. In this veil , I generally use 23cm wide finer grade
veiling and the standard length of the veil between combs is 40 cm (can vary on some designs) . this can also be customised by
request . The classic way to wear it is by positioning the combs in the hair on either side of
the head. But you can also experiment with this piece, for example wrap it around a low bun , over the top of the
head and forehead rather than the eyes.
This is a fresh modern look , it is good for creating a very stream
lined effect as there is not much puffyness to this look and works well with any style or theme. It works well
with both a modern wedding theme, for example if your dress is a shorter length, but can also look fabulous
with vintage style dresses. It can be very simple with a couple of crystal combs on either side or can have an
elaborate fascinator on one side and a simple crystal comb on the other. The possibilities on this design are endless. Bandeau veils with fascinators are a fabulous option if you want the veil to be detachable, they can be
made so that after the ceremony you can remove the veil and still keep the fascinator or crystal comb in your hair ( Please
note this is not available with all designs as some of the crystal combs are too small to do this with).
Securing the bandeau veil
tip bobby pins are
a girls best friend with this design. not only are they used to help secure the veil at either side in addition to the
combs but can also be used at the top of the veil ie. where the veil sits in the hair.
Want
to achieve a snug look to the head ?small adjustments to the length of the veil (ie between combs ) can
be made by tightening the veil and pinning under the fascinator or comb. Also turning under the top edge in the hair will give
the appearance of a snugger fit.
Want the bandeau veil to sit a little shorter
?(ie from hair down over the face) Turn under the top edge of the bandeau that sits next to the hair , this
also gives the effect of making the t look more fitted to the head and softens the look of the edge of the veil as it
gives a rounded effect.
